Best tower defense games on mobile we reviewed

Mobile tower defense where placement matters, from the two we kept playing to the ones that roll your upgrades for you.

What tower defense games are

Tower defense is simple to explain and hard to master. Enemies walk a path, you place towers along it, the towers shoot, and between waves you spend what you earned on more towers and upgrades. The good ones make placement and upgrade order matter. The lazy ones let a dice roll or an ad decide.

Nearly every tower defense game we have played is a free mobile game with ads and in-app purchases, so monetization is part of every verdict here. Roguelike tower defense, where each run offers random tower upgrades, is the current trend, and both games we recommend belong to it.

Our top 5

  1. Galaxy Defense: Fortress TD

A genuinely fun roguelike tower defense for mobile, as long as you accept some grinding for gold in the later stages.

Android · iOS · Play it
  2. Wittle Defender

A polished, genuinely fun dungeon defense roguelike that respects your time more than almost anything else in the genre.

Android · iOS · Play it
  3. Tower Tactics II

A roguelike tower defense where your turrets come from a hand of cards, and the two genres fit so well they never feel stitched together; the only thing off is balance, with one hero leaking first waves and the other barely able to lose.

    PC · Play it
  4. Lucky Guy

A wave defense game where random rolls decide your upgrades, your survival and whole levels, and an ad stands between you and nearly every reward.

Android · iOS · Skip it
  5. Lazy Apocalypse: Tower Defense

A clever streamer twist can't save combat this repetitive or ads this pushy.

Android · iOS · Skip it

How we judge tower defense games

Tower defense on a phone splits cleanly into two kinds. One kind gives you a map, a budget and a wave counter, and the fun is in the placement. The other kind rolls your upgrades for you, puts an ad in front of every shortcut and calls the randomness "roguelike". We have played both kinds and the list below sorts them.

Galaxy Defense: Fortress TD and Wittle Defender are the two we kept playing after the review was done. Neither puts a forced ad between waves: Galaxy Defense keeps its ads optional and rewarded, with a 55 euro ad removal we call out in the review, and Wittle Defender only pushes one when you revive mid battle. Both have builds worth planning, and both have a later-game grind we say plainly. Lazy Apocalypse and Lucky Guy are on this page so you do not have to find out for yourself.

What we check

  • Placement and builds decide the wave, not a dice roll
  • No forced ad between waves
  • The later-game grind is said plainly
